War of the Worlds (2005)
4 Stars out of 5

When you first look at the title, your mind, in my opinion should be bombarded with scenarios and images of a war that takes action in these days. Therefore, I was expecting to see armament from guns to thermobaric weapons or nuclear weapons etc.. Not an alien invasion. Thus, I could only say that I was pleasantly surprised by the actual war that was presented in the movie, because it was a new and original alternative for a war. 'A war seen from another perspective...'

Firstly, War of the Worlds fits in more than one genre and these are: Action, Adventure and the obvious one Sci-Fi. Secondly... just let me tell you the plot of this film:
The scenario is based on updating the novel by H.G. Wells known as the first Sci-Fi story about invading alien, a story that has become classical. The subject is the extraordinary struggle of humanity to secure the eyes of an American family who wants to survive. Tom Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a divorced docher worker, who recognizes that he is far from a perfect father. Shortly after his ex-wife and current husband leave the children, adolescent Robbie and little Rachel with him, a strong and strange storm begins. A few moments later, on a crossroad near his home, Ray is witnessing an out of ordinary event that will change his life forever. A giant machine blows out of the earth and before anyone can react, it burns everything that comes out of its way. Now, a normal day becomes an unusual adventure and it is the first hit of a catastrophic alien attack on Earth. Ray struggles to save his children from this enemy without mercy and trains on a journey that will carry him along and across the country and integrate him into a stream of desperate refugees. They run from an alien army of tripods. But wherever they go, there is no safety, no refuge. There's only Ray who has to protect his family.

Furthermore, from my point of view, the message of the movie is: Don't fight terrorism. It will miraculously go away if you leave it alone and it breaths our air and America's culture, in this case.
I am aware that this message doesn't really makes sense, but this is because I would have to spoil everything in order to make you understand. So, my advice is: Go to see the movie!

Characters: Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise), Robie Ferrier (Justin Chatwin), Rachel Ferrier (Dakota Fanning), Mary Ann (Miranda Otto)

Because it is a Sci-Fi movie,  for scenes where the tripoids would burn with laser everything and everyone, there would be long and detailed previsualization processes due to the high volume of visual effects. Also, in order to display the aliens, they developed animated storyboards. Even more, there are lots of sound effects which create tension and suspense. The interesting parts of the camera work is where there are many moving parts in order to get all the elements in correct relation to one one another, so it gives the effect of chaos. There are also lots of changes in focus, so it transmits a similar sense, but of unsureness and fear.

For a significant part of the movie, Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) and his daughter are holed up in an old basement with Ogilvy (Tim Robbins). Robbins’ character wants to fight the outer-space invaders or at least die trying. Ray doesn’t want to. He just wants to be silent and wait it out. Because he and Ogilvy are at odds over the strategy to fight the alien terrorists, Ray murders Ogilvy. And magically, the invaders eventually die and go away at the end of the film because, as narrator Morgan Freeman says, they could not handle the bad things in our air, our environment, our culture. Our “spirit” won out over them.
But “spirit” alone does not beat terrorists. Fighting them does. And that involves going on the offense. Terrorists don’t just give up and disappear. They are not aliens who can’t handle our air. Hello? They live among us–they’re of the same species.

As a conclusion, I enjoyed this movie a lot, because it shows a war from a different imagination and the idea is creative which makes is seem not real but at the same time, due to the amazing special effects, it can potentially make us believe in an alien invasion; because they play with our mind. By this I mean  that they are so good that they remain imprinted in our mind, so we don't forget what happened in the movie, and as I said, we would  possibly consider this, as an actual war.
Hence, I would definitely recommend this movie to the people who love to take their imagination beyond and to those that love to take risks and are adventurous or even for someone who is bored and wants to escape from their boring life or day routine.
